Easter Sunday: Saul of Tarsus
We often tend to think that the guy who is the farthest away from God is the really mean one such as Hitler, Stalin, or Mao Tse-tung, or maybe the really big lawbreaker, Al Capone, Charles Manson, Ted Bundy, or Jeffrey Dahmer. I think we can say that these men were not close to God. However, it is tempting to believe that the religious are close to God. This week, we are going to look at a guy who was as religious as possible. He was taught by the best, and followed the teachings that he had received to the letter. He believed that he exceeded all others. During his early life it is my view that had we been able to ask him about his life, he would have told us that no one exceeded him when it came to being “right with God.” Now, of course, he would base his answer of being “right with God” upon his own ability to follow the Jewish laws and their subsequent additions. This week he is going to tell us what changed him from a hater of Christianity to its second most famous proponent. It is a great story that you may have heard before, but not in these exact words.
