Rich and Poor

Beginning May 17, we will be taking a look at “The Sermon on the Mount.” I last preached over this entire passage 18 years ago, shortly after I became your pastor. No, this is not going to be refried beans! I am reading it, reading what the commentators say about it, and letting it form anew in my mind. I am prayerful that the Lord will do a new work in me and in us as we go through this wonderful sermon by our Lord. (I mean, how much better does it get than a sermon by Jesus?) Jesus said a mouthful, and it can be read in about 10-12 minutes, but its depth and meaning go on for hours. This first week, we consider Matthew 5:1-3, but our radar is going to focus on verse 3, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven.” I am praying that when this message is over, we will all recognize our poverty.
